    Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Tesla Model S and 2016-2018 Model X vehicles with a center display equipped with a NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor and an 8GB eMMC NAND flash memory device. When the 8GB eMMC NAND flash memory device for the center display reaches lifetime wear, the eMMC controller will no longer be able to maintain the integrity of the filesystem, causing a failure in some of the center display functions.
  • Consequence:
    The eMMC controller wear-out condition can cause the loss of the rearview camera display, defrost/defog control settings, and exterior turn signal lighting, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy:
    Owners should ensure their vehicles are operating firmware release 2020.48.48.12 or newer, which will alert owners if the eMMC is approaching lifetime wear. Tesla will notify owners, and will replace the VCM daughterboard with one containing an enhanced eMMC controller, free of charge. The recall began March 29, 2021.   • Consequence:
    If the seat belt is not correctly attached to the pretensioner, it may not properly restrain the seat occupant in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.
  • Remedy:
    Tesla will notify owners, and service centers will inspect the driver and front passenger seat belts, correcting their connection, as necessary, free of charge.     If the gear breaks during parking brake release, the vehicle will not be able to be moved. If the gear breaks during parking brake application, the parking brake may not adequately hold the vehicle, potentially resulting in the vehicle rolling, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy:

  • Consequence:
    Loss of power steering assist would require a higher steering effort, especially at lower speeds, which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy:

    8:15 AM, 6/19/20, I HEAD A SICKENING THWACK FROM THE STREET FROM ABT 300 YDS AWAY. EERILY, BEC SOMETHING VERY LARGE WAS HIT WITH NO SOUND OF SQUEALING BRAKES OR CRIES, I WENT OUT FRONT TO LOOK LEFT WITHOUT SEEING ANYTHING. THEN I LOOKED RIGHT AND SAW A MAN CROUCHED TO THE GROUND BESIDE A CAR. I IOOKED FURTHER RT & SAW THE BACK OF A MAN THROWN FACE-FIRST INTO MY TREES. I DIDN'T IMME REGISTER WHAT I WAS LOOKING AT UNTIL I RECOGNIZED THE BODY AS MY HUSBAND, SCREAMED, & RAN TO HIM. HE WAS SNORING LOUDLY. I WAS AFRAID TO TOUCH HIM, SO I HOVERED OVER HIM CALLING HIS NAME. HE DID NOT RESPOND. I TURNED TO THE STREET, SCREAMING AT PASSERS-BY TO CALL 911. THE CROUCHING MAN SAID HE HAD, BUT I WAS FEARFUL OF HIM & THOUGHT, "HOW DO I KNOW YOU HAVE? WHY ARE YOU SO FAR AWAY? DIDN'T YOU EVEN COME OVER TO CHECK ON HIM?" I KEPT SCREAMING AS DRIVERS STOPPED THEIR CARS AND PEOPLE GATHERED. OUR 19-YR-OLD DAUGHTER CAME RUNNING OUT OF THE HOUSE, FOLLOWED BY OUR 17 AND 15-YR-OLD SONS. AN AMBULANCE CAME AND TOOK MY HUSBAND, REFUSING ME BECAUSE OF COVID. THEN I SPOKE WITH 1 OF 2 POLICE WHILE THE OTHER SPOKE TO THE DRIVER OF THE TESLA. HE SAID THE DRIVER ADMITTED TO BEING ON HIS PHONE AS THE CAR DROVE ITSELF, NEVER SEEING MY HUSBAND AND DRIVING 45 MPH. WHEN HE SAID I COULD LEAVE, I WENT TO THE ER WHERE I WAS IMME TOLD MY HUSBAND HAD SUSTAINED SEVERE BRAIN DAMAGE TO BOTH SIDES OF HIS BRAIN AND CATASTROPHIC OTHER INJURIES. A POLICE INVESTIGATOR MET ME AT THE ER. INVESTIGATION OF THE VEHICLE & DOWNLOAD OF THE COMPUTER WERE COMPLETED AT POLICE STATION. I WAS LATER TOLD HE WAS DOA, BUT BROUGHT BACK.10 MOS LATER, HUSBAND IS A NON-COMMUNICATING QUADRIPLEGIC, SEVERE TBI, FEEDING TUBE.

ON MARCH 10 WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON A SMOOTH STRAIGHT FREEWAY THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IN MY CAR FAILED CAUSING PROPULSION TO GO OFF LINE AND THE BRAKE PEDAL TO LOCK UP AND BECOME NON-FUNCTIONAL UNTIL THE SYSTEM REBOOTED. FOR APPROXIMATELY 20 TO 30 SECONDS IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL. FORTUNATELY I WAS ON THE FREEWAY AND PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL WASN’T REQUIRED. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE NOW SINCE I HAD MISTAKENLY BELIEVED THAT THERE WAS REDUNDANCY IN THE SYSTEMS THAT WOULD PRESERVE BRAKE FUNCTION IN THE MIDST OF A POWER FAILURE. THERE IS NO MANUAL HAND BRAKE. I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED THAT A SYSTEM FAILURE LIKE THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN AS I AM APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION, A SCHOOL ZONE OR GOING DOWN A STEEP DECLINE. I BELIEVE THAT THE CAUSE OF SO MANY TESLAS HAVING WRENCHED OFF WHEELS IS VERY SIMPLE. CIRCUMSTANCES CAN OCCUR IN WHICH FULL BRAKING IS APPLIED TO A WHEEL BUT THE MOTOR IS STILL AT FULL POWER. THE ELECTRONICS ARE NOT INFALLIBLE. GLITCHES CAN OCCUR. EVEN IF POWER TO THE MOTOR IS SHUT DOWN THERE IS STILL MASSIVE STORED ENERGY IN THE ROTOR OF THE HIGH RPM ELECTRIC MOTOR WHICH ACTS AS A MASSIVE FLYWHEEL. THE SUSPENSION LINKAGES ARE NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND THE TORQUE WHICH IS THEN APPLIED. IT IS EVEN WORSE IF THE ABS OR TRACTION CONTROL PULSES THE BRAKES BECAUSE THIS THEN GIVES A HAMMER BLOW EFFECT. THIS FAILURE CAN AFFECT EITHER THE FRONT WHEELS OR THE REAR WHEELS.     TESLA MODEL S HAD BEEN SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR 2 YEARS, SUE TO A MEDICAL CONDITION I HAD. AT NEAR THE END OF 2 YEARS I WALKED DOWN TO EXAMINE THE CAR, NOTICED THE CAR HAD SETTLED DOWN ONTO THE TIRES. I HAD IT CHARGING CONTINUOUSLY, BUT APPARENTLY THE CHARGING OPERATION HAD FAULTED, AND THE CAR WAS DEAD. I CHARGED THE 12V COMPUTER BATTERY, THEN CHARGED THE 400 VOLT TRACTION BATTERY. I TURNED IT ON BUT COULD NOT MOVE FAR BECAUSE THERE WAS SOME INTERFERENCE BETWEEN TIRES AND INSIDE THE FENDERS, WHEN I WOULD HIT A BUMP. I WAITED FOR THE AIR SUSPENSION TO BE PUMPED UP, AND DROVE THE CAR TO HEAD FOR A TESLA SUPERCHARGER STATION. THE TRIP THERE FELT SQUIRRELY AND ASSUMED IT WAS MY STUDDED SNOW TIRES. AT THE SUPERCHARGER THE STEERING GOT VERY DIFFICULT, AND WHEN I LEFT I HAQD TO DRIVE CAREFULLY TO FEEL COMFORTABLE TO MY HOME. I RESEARCHED ONLINE, FOUND THE ELECTRIFIED GARAGE IN SEABROOK, NH AND SET UP A SERVICE APPOINTMENT. THEY DISCOVERED I NEEDED REPLACEMENT REAR AIR SHOCKS AND A NEW STEERING BOX. THEY EXPLAINED THAT BECAUSE THE SHOCKS WERE NOT MOVING FOR 2 YEARS, THEY DEVELOPED A CORROSION BETWEEN DISSIMILAR METALS (STEEL AND ALUMINUM) ON THE SHOCKS. THAT RESULTED IN CORROSION ON THE STEEL, AND CORROSION ON THE ALUMINUM, ALLOWING LARGE O-RINGS TO EXPAND AND LEAK AIR. THE REPAIR SHOP SAID THEY ONLY SEE THAT WITH TESLAS THAT SIT UNUSED FOR A TIME. I EMAILED TESLA NOTIFYING THEM, BUT THEY NEVER RESPONDED, PERHAPS BECAUSE BY THEN I WAS 14 MONTHS BEYOND MY WARRANTY. I WILL PUT IN A DIFFERENT COMPLAINT FOR THE FAILED STEERING BOX. MILEAGE AT INCIDENT WAS 7,690. THE CORROSION AND RUST COULD HAVE BEEN DEFEATED WITH APPROPRIATE ENGINEERING, SUCH AS A PLASTIC SHIELD BETWEEN STEEL AND ALUMINUM.

ON MILE ~800 OF THE TRIP, WE FOLLOWED THE GPS DIRECTIONS TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY TO SKIP SOME TRAFFIC. UNFORTUNATELY THE EXPECTED ON RAMP WAS CLOSED, SO WE ENDED UP ON A POORLY MAINTAINED STRETCH OF FEEDER ROAD JUST OUTSIDE VIDOR. RIGHT AFTER THE FORCED U-TURN SO WE DIDN'T END UP IN THE NECHES RIVER, I AVOIDED A POTHOLE ONLY TO HIT ANOTHER... AND THIS ONE WAS BAD. SO BAD, IN FACT, THAT WE BECAME ONE OF THREE CARS WITH OUR HAZARDS ON RIGHT AFTER IT DUE TO DAMAGE TO THE CARS. I THOUGHT I HAD POPPED A TIRE, BUT WHEN I GOT OUT, IT WAS MUCH WORSE.     ON THE AFTERNOON OF NOVEMBER 25, 2015, I WAS DRIVING INTO A STRIP MALL PARKING LOT. WHEN APPROACHING THE PARKING SPACE, THE CAR WAS ALREADY IN REGENERATIVE BRAKING MODE, AND ACCORDING TO TESLA’S LOGS, THE CAR SLOWED DOWN TO 3.5 MPH. SINCE THE CAR HAD ENOUGH MOMENTUM TO ROLL INTO THE SPACE ON ITS OWN, MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE ACCELERATOR OR THE BRAKE PEDAL. MY FOOT WAS UP RESTING ON ITS HEEL, READY TO TAP THE BRAKE WHEN IT GOT CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE CURB. WHILE THE CAR WAS COASTING INTO THE SPACE THE MOTOR WAS VERY QUIET. AFTER THE IMPACT, I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED UNTIL I OPENED MY EYES AND SAW THE DEFLATED AIRBAGS IN THE CAR. IT LOOKED LIKE THE CAR JUMPED THE CURB, HIT THE BRICK WALL, BOUNCED BACKWARDS FROM THE IMPACT AND LANDED BACK INTO THE PARKING SPACE. ACCORDING TO TESLA’S LOGS, THE DATA READS THAT THE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED DOWN TO 97% AND THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT WAS DUE TO DRIVER ERROR. I STAND FIRMLY BY MY STATEMENT THAT MY FOOT WAS NOT ON EITHER THE ACCELERATOR OR THE BRAKE PEDAL WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED. DATA MAY SHOW THERE WAS PEDAL DEPRESSION BUT I DID NOT DO THE DEPRESSING. THIS SPECIFIC SCENARIO WAS ON A HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES AND I HAVE MADE TESLA AWARE OF THE DEFECT/BUG. OWNERS HAVE REPORTED THAT THE MODEL S DOES NOT HAVE BUMP STOPS ON THE SUSPENSION SO THAT LOSS OF AIR PRESSURE CAN HAVE DISASTROUS CONSEQUENCES. "THE RIGHT FRONT AIR STRUT FAILED DUE TO A LEAK WHICH CAUSED THE WHOLE FRONT OF THE CAR TO DROP SO MUCH THAT THE WHEELS WERE RUBBING AGAINST THE INSIDE OF THE WHEEL WELL, AND THE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS RUBBING ON THE GROUND. THE CAR BECAME ABSOLUTELY NOT DRIVABLE. LUCKILY I WAS PARKED WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER COULD ONLY DO INCH-BY-INCH TURNS TO ORIENT THE CAR TO FACE THE TOW TRUCK, AND THEN HAD TO MOVE IT UP AGAIN INCH-BY-INCH USING WOODEN BLOCKS JUST SO THE WHEEL WELL AND THE BOTTOM WOULD NOT GET DAMAGED. WHY DOESN’T TESLA AIR-SUSPENSION DESIGN INCORPORATE SOME SORT OF A STOPPER TO STOP THE CAR FROM GOING LOWER THAN THE LOWEST FUNCTIONAL AIR-SUSPENSION SETTING? I GOT THE CAR TOWED TO THE TESLA SERVICE IN DUBLIN CALIFORNIA . THEY TOOK MY CAR IN FRIDAY EVENING. THE NEXT MONDAY THEY CALLED AND SAID THE LEFT REAR AXLE & WHEEL ARE BROKEN . THE COST TO REPAIR $13,000. THEY DENIED THAT THIS IS WARRANTY ISSUE . MY INSURANCE PAID FOR THIS OUTRAGEOUS REPAIR COST . IT TOOK 3 WEEKS FOR THEM TO FIX THE AXLE & THE WHEEL . THE OTHER PHOTOS SHOW THE CONTROL ARM COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED FROM ITS MOUNTING POINT. THERE WAS SOME DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL WELL LINER AND LIP OF THE FENDER THANKS TO THE SLOW SPEED THAT IT OCCURRED. THE CAR HAD TO BE DRIVEN BACKWARDS ONTO A FLATBED TRAILER AND THEN DOLLY'S PUT UNDER THE FRONT WHEELS IN ORDER TO GET THE CAR TO ROLL FORWARD INTO THE REPAIR SHOP. THOUGH I RECOGNIZE THAT THE VAST MAJORITY OF ACCIDENTS OF THIS TYPE ARE DUE TO DRIVER ERROR, THERE ARE SEVERAL FACTORS THAT LEAVE ME WITH CONCERN FOR A POSSIBLE ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS MALFUNCTION. SPECIFICALLY, ~3 DAYS PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT, THE CAR BEGAN DISPLAYING A CONSTANT ERROR MESSAGE: “DRIVER ASSISTANCE FEATURES UNAVAILABLE". I NOTIFIED TESLA SERVICE BY PHONE AND EMAIL, AND ON THEIR INSTRUCTIONS, REBOOTED THE COMPUTER SYSTEM, AND FULLY POWERED DOWN AND RESTARTED THE SYSTEM. HOWEVER, THE ERROR MESSAGE PERSISTED. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO SCHEDULE A SERVICE CALL. I HAVE REQUESTED DETAILS FROM THE DATA LOGS FOR THE ACCIDENT FROM TESLA, BUT THEY HAVE PROVIDED ONLY VERY LIMITED INFORMATION, STATING THAT LEGAL ACTION ON MY PART WOULD BE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN MORE DETAIL. THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THE CAR SPEED WAS 3.6 MPH AT WHICH TIME THE DATA INDICATES THAT THE ACCELERATOR WAS PRESSED TO AS FAR AS 100%, RESULTING IN ACCELERATION OF THE CAR TO 7 MPH AT THE TIME OF IMPACT, WITH THIS ACCELERATION OCCURRING OVER A 2 SECOND TIME PERIOD. THIS INFORMATION SEEMS INCOMPATIBLE WITH THE OTHERWISE RAPID ACCELERATION TYPICALLY EXHIBITED BY THIS CAR WITH A FULLY DEPRESSED ACCELERATOR, AND THE SHORT DISTANCE TRAVELED (ONLY SEVERAL FEET).

I WAS TOLD IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS BY SERVICE MANAGER KASI SMITH, THAT MY CAR IS BLACKLISTED BY TESLA SINCE IT HAS A REBUILT TITLE. THAT IN ORDER FOR THE RECALLS TO BE DONE I MUST GET THE CAR "RECERTIFIED" AT A COST OF BETWEEN $5,000 TO $32,000, DEPENDING ON WHETHER REPAIRS ARE NEEDED. SO I CALLED TESLA'S NATIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE (877.798.3752) AND REACHED LOUIS ESCOBAR AT TESLA'S BURBANK, CA LOCATION. AFTER HE CHECKED WITH THE SEATTLE SERVICE CENTER (WHICH I'D ALREADY TOLD HIM REFUSED ME) AND WITH HIS SUPERVISOR, HUNTER CARLSON, MR. ESCOBAR INFORMED ME THAT MY CAR IS BLACKLISTED BY TESLA SINCE IT HAS A REBUILT TITLE, AND IN ORDER FOR THE RECALLS TO BE DONE I MUST GET THE CAR "RECERTIFIED". THERE IS A PICTURE OF THE BROKEN PART ATTACHED. THE WHEEL WELL WAS DAMAGED AND THE TRIM AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR WAS LOOSE. THERE APPEARS TO BE NO CAUSE FOR THIS FAILURE AS THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE ROAD, NO POT HOLES, NO OBJECTS, NO BUMPS. THE CAR WAS DRIVING FINE BEFORE THIS OCCURRED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ABOUT 3 MINUTES AFTER I STARTED THE TRIP. SPEED WAS LOW THE ENTIRE TRIP AS I WAS LEAVING A RESTAURANT IN A DOWNTOWN AREA FULL OF PEDESTRIANS, STOP SIGNS AND PARKING SPACES. THE EMMC, THOUGH IT DOES NOT CONTROL THE CAR'S PROPULSION, BRAKING OR STEERING, IS THE HEART OF THE TOUCHSCREEN WHICH IS USED TO TURN ON HEADLIGHTS, ADJUST HVAC AND ALL CAR SETTINGS RUN THROUGH THE TOUCHSCREEN. THE HVAC UNIT NOW HAS A "DOG MODE" WHICH KEEPS THE CABIN COOL FOR DOGS OR OCCUPANTS WAITING IN CAR. THE FAILURE OF THE TOUCHSCREEN UNIT WHILE IN DOG MODE COULD RESULT IN HEAT-RELATED FATALITY, SHOULD AN OWNER. WITH TESLA'S DIRECT CONTROL OF THEIR SERVICE CENTERS, LACK OF DEALERS OR INDEPENDENT SHOPS. THIS MEANS THAT THE ONLY WAY TO GET PARTS OR SERVICE IS THROUGH TESLA THEMSELVES. YET IN THE PAST THEY HAVE REFUSED TO WORK ON SALVAGED CARS UNTIL THEY HAVE BEEN RECERTIFED BY TESLA. THIS COULD POTENTIALLY LEAD TO HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF CAR ON THE ROAD THAT NEED ACCESS TO PARTS, SERVICE AND REPAIRS. THAT DUE TO TESLA'S POLICIES COULD POTENTIALLY BECOME A LIABILITY ON THE ROAD. THE SECOND AREA OF CONCERN IS THAT TESLA ALSO CAN SEND UPDATES THAT ACTIVELY DEACTIVATE FEATURES OF THE CAR. SUCH AS AUTOPILOT AND ACCESS TO THE SUPERCHARGING NETWORK. EVEN IF SAID FEATURES WHERE PURCHASED AND ARE THUS LINKED TO THE CAR FOR IT'S FORESEEABLE LIFETIME. THIS IS A TESTAMENT TO THE TECHNOLOGY AND CAPABILITIES OF OVER THE AIR UPDATES. HOWEVER, BY DISABLING SOFTWARE UPDATES. IT COULD LEAD TO SALVAGED CARS HAVING GROSSLY OUTDATED SOFTWARE. POTENTIALLY LEADING TO HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUALS OPERATING CARS WITH POTENTIALLY BUGGY OUTDATED SOFTWARE, THAT WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE BEEN PATCHED AND LEAD TO A ACCIDENT DUE TO A SHUTDOWN EVENT, ECT. NOT TO MENTION THE ACT OF DISABLING AUTOPILOT DISABLES SAFETY FEATURES SUCH AS AUTOMATIC BREAKING, THAT COULD PREVENT A ACCIDENT IN THE FIRST PLACE. IT IS THUS, MY HOPE THAT NHTSA COULD LOOK INTO THESE CONCERNS AND HOPEFULLY MAKE ALL TESLA CARS SAFER IN THE ROAD.     I JUST JOINED THE BROKEN FORELINK CLUB. MY 2015 S P90D DEVELOPED AN ERRATIC LOW "THUMP" SOUND FROM THE FRONT END WHILE DRIVING HOME - FORTUNATELY ON LOW SPEED STREETS. NEXT DAY I PLANNED TO TAKE IT TO THE SERVICE CENTER TO HAVE IT CHECKED, BUT WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, TURNING THE WHEEL TO THE RIGHT TO JOIN THE STREET, IT MADE AN OMINOUS CRUNCHING SOUND AND SHUT OFF. FINALLY, THE CAR REBOOTED AND I SLOWLY MOVED UP THE DRIVEWAY AND STOPPED. WHEN I TURNED THE WHEEL TO THE RIGHT, I COULD SEE THE TIRE HITTING THE REAR OF THE WHEEL WELL - THE CAR AGAIN SHUT ITSELF OFF. I CALLED TESLA ROADSIDE SERVICE, A FLATBED CAME, THE CAR REBOOTED LONG ENOUGH TO STRAIGHTEN THE WHEELS AND GET THE CAR ON THE TRUCK. THE TRUCK DRIVER SAID HE HAD SEEN THIS BEFORE, AND THAT WHOLE WHEEL WELLS HAD DISINTEGRATED. THEY REPLACED BOTH FORELINKS WITH "IMPROVED" PARTS. IT IS FRIGHTENING TO THINK OF WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED AT 75 MPH ON THE FREEWAY! I'M NOT SURE HOW MUCH I TRUST THE REPAIR FROM WHAT I HAVE READ IN THE TESLA FORUM - NUMEROUS SUCH FAILURES - BUT I WILL CERTAINLY KEEP AN EAR OUT FOR LOW-FREQUENCY THUMPS - ANOTHER VIGILANCE TASK.
